Authorities have discovered about six tones of cannabis and 3 million superpill capsules of amphetamine "captagon" hidden on board the “Nova” ship sailing under a Syrian flag.
The cargo ship with a crew of 11 people sailed from the Syrian port of Latakia to the Libyan port of Benghazi when it has been captured by the Greek authorities at the southeastern coast of the island Crete on December the 5th.
“Noka” has been escorted to the port of Heraklion on the Greek island on December the 8th , where the authorities landed the entire cargo.
Drugs have been found under false floors in eight containers, hidden between layers of coffee, spices and sawdust.
Syria has become a major exporter and consumer of amphetamines after the civil war trauma in the country has provoked a demand, and the collapse of the country has created an opportunity for manufacturers.
The captagon is said to be a tool for fundraising and a stimulus for extremists. Now, the government controls most of the country, and the DAESH ("Islamic State") terrorist group is about to be defeated.
The Greek authorities have detained the ship and its cargo. The crew has been arrested and will appear before a prosecutor on Saturday.
Scientists point out that the captagon is a highly stimulating amphetamine with unique chemical complexity, allowing it to cause strong psychoactive effects much faster than ordinary amphetamines.
